Myth Check, Part 1: "ADHD Is Mostly a Boys' Thing" – Why ADHD in Women Is Often Overlooked

Woman in a green sweater sits thoughtfully in a therapy armchair while a tangled scribble above her turns into a calm head silhouette with leaves

"ADHD? That's the fidgety boys in the back row." This picture is hard to shake. It is one reason why ADHD in women is often recognized late, sometimes only at 35 or 45.

What is true about the myth, and what isn't

Yes, in children ADHD is diagnosed much more often in boys than in girls. In adults, however, the gap is much smaller. Experts assume that many girls and women are simply missed. So ADHD is not a "male" condition. It is just more noticeable in boys.

Why ADHD in women is often overlooked

Quiet, not loud. For many girls and women, inattention is the main issue. Someone gazing quietly out of the window doesn't disturb anyone and is seen as a daydreamer.

Restlessness on the inside. Hyperactivity often shows up as racing thoughts, talking non-stop or the feeling of never being able to switch off.

Masking. Many women compensate for years: lists, overtime, perfectionism. On the outside everything looks under control. Inside, it takes an enormous amount of energy.

Other diagnoses first. Often depression, anxiety or exhaustion are treated first. These can exist alongside ADHD. But the underlying cause often stays undiscovered.

Hormones. Many women report that their symptoms get stronger before their period, after giving birth or during menopause. Research on this is still young, but the evidence is growing.

Where you might recognize yourself

Do you feel you have to try harder than others to get the same things done? Do you forget appointments even though you wrote them down three times? Does criticism hit you hard, and are you completely drained in the evening? And have you basically known all this since your school days?

That is not a diagnosis yet. But it is a good reason to take a closer look. You can find more typical signs here: ADHD in adults: signs that are often overlooked.

Quick answers

Do women have ADHD less often than men?

In children, ADHD is diagnosed much more often in boys. In adults, the difference is smaller. Many women probably just go unrecognized.

How does ADHD show up in women?

Often more quietly: inattention, inner restlessness, forgetfulness, strong emotions and exhaustion from constant compensating. Frequently, depression or an anxiety disorder is recognized first.

Can I still get assessed for ADHD at 40?

Yes. An ADHD assessment is possible at any adult age. At Psymondo, it is carried out by Vanessa Tobisch, licensed psychological psychotherapist (behavioral therapy) and psychologist (M.Sc.). The first session usually takes place by video, the testing on site in Munich. Sessions are available in German and English.
